We were extremely pleased to welcome back ACM alumnus Ben Scott to our Guildford campus recently.
Having performed for Ed Sheeran on his debut album, ‘+’, Ben has certainly proved himself as a successful session drummer, and we were thrilled that he took time out of his busy schedule to give an intimate masterclass for our students.
Ben’s session focussed on all the elements of a working musician’s life and how to balance them effectively to give the best chances for success. From networking to invoices and practice to session work, Ben covered all the aspects of his own career in order to give great insight to other drummers looking to develop their careers.
During the class Ben told the students that they needed to find something about themselves that was unique; a reason for why people will choose them. He told the class to make the best first impression by focusing on every little detail, right down to your guitar bag being clean and learning an entire repertoire as opposed to just the audition piece.
When asked about his first break into the music industry, Ben said that he started a band during his own studies at ACM. The band was then picked up by management leading to supporting a US band signed to the same manager. He urged the class to “get into as many bands as you can” as you never know where your next opportunity will present itself.
Ben also advised students to properly record their practice routines to make the best use of their time and to schedule in time for networking, adding “socialising is a skill”.
